In the past we’ve discussed the problems you might encounter with having complex dental work carried out overseas. One question that might not be front of mind is “are the materials or devices going into my mouth approved for use in Australia?”
The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is part of the Australian Government Department of Health and is responsible for regulating therapeutic goods including prescription medicines, vaccines, sunscreens, vitamins and minerals and medical devices.
For a dentist in Australia to fit a dental implant or the crown that attaches to it as an example, it needs firstly to be approved for use by the TGA. The TGA assesses a device’s quality, safety and performance so that it is fit for purpose, meets international standards and is manufactured to a high standard as well as ensuring ongoing monitoring of any potential problems that might arise from devices used in Australia.
That implant you had fitted overseas may not be approved in Australia. This is where things can become difficult if for example a new crown is ever required to be fitted to an implant. This could leave you with an expensive problem.
Before you go overseas, speak to your trusted local dentist. The team at Brookfield Road Dental Kenmore are here to help.
