WHAT TOOTHPASTE IS RIGHT FOR ME?

What once upon a time was considered a simple choice based on a preferred brand or flavour can now be bewildering.  What toothpaste should I be using?

There are countless alternatives on the market competing for your dollar, all angling a different selling point.  What is really important to me?  Will the toothpaste protect my teeth from decay?  Will it prevent gum disease or tooth sensitivity? Is it made from natural ingredients or might it cause harm, or at the very least might I be sensitive to its ingredients? Will it help keep my teeth whiter?

Nano Hydroxyapatite (nHA) is gaining a lot of attention as a possible alternative to fluoride in toothpastes to help remineralise weakened tooth enamel and has been pitched as a natural alternative.  Whilst research into the dental benefits of nHA is promising, there is still a lot more work to be done to rival the evidence (and the sheer bulk of research) into the benefits of fluoride toothpastes.  It is worth bearing in mind that nHA toothpastes whilst readily available in Australia are not currently included on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods.

However you decide to go in regards to toothpaste choice, don’t overlook the most important decision you can make about your ongoing dental health.  Having your teeth and gums checked regularly by a trusted dental professional is the best decision in the long term.
