Alcohol and your Dental Health

Today we are conscious of our health and wellbeing more than ever before. Our relationship with alcohol has quite rightly come under scrutiny, particularly during the COVID pandemic.

It is well known excess alcohol consumption is linked with many general health and social problems, primarily liver diseases (including liver cancer), diabetes, heart disease as well as throat cancers and negative effects on our mental health.

Studies show that excess alcohol consumption is linked to increased crime rates, family and domestic violence and that drinking during pregnancy risks harm to unborn children.

It is true, though that we can become numb to information overload or just rather not think about the problem.

Have you considered how alcohol affects your dental and oral health? If these changes are staring you right back in the mirror it could be a trigger for positive change!

The issues include significantly increased risk of

· oral cancers

· tooth wear and erosion

· bad breath

· gum disease

· staining and

· Dental decay.

It might be that getting rid of bad breath or fixing that chipped tooth really calls for more than a simple fix. Whilst our team of dentists at Brookfield Road Dental at Kenmore are here to help with dental issues, if you are looking to bring positive change to your relationship with alcohol your first conversation should be with your medical GP.
