Dry Mouth: More Than Just A Nuisance

Dry mouth or a lack of saliva can sometimes be a temporary problem, such as when we are nervous or dehydrated. Constant, chronic dry mouth becomes a real problem for our dental health when we lack the protection our saliva gives our teeth and gums. This can make us a higher risk of dental decay and gum disease.

Saliva not only helps us to chew and swallow foods but also neutralizes acids, fights against bacteria and viruses and helps to re-harden the enamel on our teeth. Amazing stuff then and definitely missed when we don’t have enough.

Reasons for lack of saliva can include age, medications, mouth breathing, some auto-immune diseases and hormone imbalances amongst other causes. Speak with your doctor to look at strategies which may improve dry mouth from a general health point of view.

Your team of Dentists here in Kenmore can help you with preventive advice to minimize the dental effects. This may include using special toothpastes and conditioners, dietary advice regarding avoiding sugary foods, staying hydrated by sipping tap water regularly and chewing sugar free gum to help stimulate saliva flow.
