Porcelain veneers are thin facades of porcelain bonded to the front surface of teeth and can be used to improve the colour, shape, length, spacing, alignment and lustre of one or several teeth. Once bonded, porcelain veneers are strong and beautiful.
Porcelain Veneers – Procedure
When porcelain veneers are constructed, the front surface of the tooth is reduced minimally to make room for the thin veneer. After this preparation, an impression is taken and a temporary or trial veneer may be placed.
The impression is sent to our local laboratory technician who fabricates the veneer using the latest porcelain technology. Because a great outcome is a collaborative effort, our technician will often be involved in selecting the shade of the veneer.
Once the porcelain veneer has been made, your dentist will try the veneer on to the tooth and ensure it is a perfect fit and the correct shade. Once the veneer is deemed to have met our stringent criteria, it is bonded into place.
Porcelain Veneers- Maintenance
Like dental crowns and bridges, porcelain veneers must be well maintained. Maintenance involves the regular removal of plaque by brushing and flossing as well as regular dental examinations with your dentist.
Porcelain Veneers – Considerations
Your dentist will help evaluate whether or not porcelain veneers are an appropriate treatment choice for you. Other alternatives include bonded composite resin veneers or dental crowns.
